Sofrito & the Blues
Sofrito & the Blues was created post-pandemic, just when it seemed we needed music the most.
What began as a trio has turned into a sextet of extraordinarily expressive musicians and music educators collaborating through our love of people and a deep desire to share joy through music and music education.
Our first performance at The Voices of Diaspora Festival in NYC (2021) helped shape what the band would become and what repertoire we would perform. Today our music highlights the influence of the African diaspora on American music, focusing on Latin, jazz, and blues.
Since then, Sofrito & the Blues has performed in many different venues across NYC, from intimate clubs to large auditoriums. Performing for audiences during our tour of the western US was a highlight of 2023. Additionally, we have collaborated with Leadlights Ensemble string quartet for family-focused community outreach programs as well as The Muse event series at The United Palace theater in Northern Manhattan.
The band is composed of Carmen Cancél on lead vocals, Jainardo Batista on percussion and vocals, César Orozco on piano, Juancho Herrera on guitar, Pedro Giraudo on bass, and Matt Garrison on saxophone and flute.

CONCERT AND EVENT REVIEWS:
Chris Weldon, W83 and Redeemer West Side NYC
I direct a concert series in Manhattan called Live@W83 and I'm so glad we booked Sofrito and the Blues. First of all, they are an incredible band of musicians, extremely entertaining, and masters of their craft. Carmen has a warm, outgoing personality and instantly develops a friendly rapport with the audience as she introduces the songs, tells stories, and interacts with other band members. The music included a varied landscape of Latin, Jazz, and Blues tunes that were treated with authenticity and flair. They were easy to work with, responsive to emails as we prepared for the concert, and treated all of our staff with respect and kindness. I highly recommend booking them for shows - your audience will thank you for it!
Yeatie Morgan, Birthday Event at Room 31 NYC
I had my 40th birthday back in March. Sofrito and the Blues performed at the Room 31 in NoMad. What an experience! The music, the lead singer Carmen's gorgeous voice, the rhythm of the congas, the jovial and easy nature among the band members made for an unforgettable experience. Loved it and would definitely go to see them again.
